Hi

I am Norwegian and my boyfriend is Australian, the baby will be borned here in Norway. I know that our child will get Norwegian nationality, but can it also be Australian? We are not married.

If it's possible to have dual citizenship, will our child then have to decide which one to pick at age 18? We are going to move to Australia when the baby is about six months. Should we get a Norwegian passport here and then apply for an Australian one when in Australia?Anyone here familiar with Australian laws here?

Heaps thanks in advance

I have recently been through this procedure. I am Australian and my husband is Norwegian. Both of our daughters were born in Norway. The children will be eligible for Australian citizenship by descent. You need to supply the International version of the childs birth certificate to The Department of Biths Deaths and Marriages in the State or Territory where your partner normally resides (and you just get that from where you usually get your birth ceretificates in Norway). You complete the forms and other necessary information from: http://www.citizenship.gov.au/becoming-a-citizen/other-ways/by-descent.htm and send all the forms and birth certificate to the Australian Embassy in Berlin for processing, along with the fee which is appprox. 100 euro I think. When entering Australia once granted citizenship the child must travel on the Australian passport. You apply for the Australian passport through the Australian Consular General in Lysaker also along with a fee... It gets processed in Copenhagen. Australia recognises dual citizenship but Norway does not. We had Norwegian passports for our girls first but didnt bother to renew them on leaving as they have a relatively short expirey date when the children are so young. As for having to choose at 18 Im still not too sure about this. Australia says no we dont have to choose and it was kind of hinted to me that who would know anyway, but Im not sure of how the legality of that comment stands up. In any instance the children will get permanent residency in the other country. If we have to choose, we have decided to go with Australian citizenship as it is much more difficult, time consuming and expensive to complete. Also, I dont think it will be a problem that you are not married as the father is still Australian.

Hope this helps you, I had a real run around trying to obtain all this information. Good Luck!

... By the way yo can do all this in Australia but its quite time consuming and you will have to wait a while for it to be processed (at least a month). But if you did choose to do that you would have to apply for residency for your child before you left which I think is more time consuming than the application for descent and would also make a double up in fees. The permanent residency is very in-depth and costs a fair bit.

Well Im back again... I just realised I gave you some wrong information. The application, certificates and fee goes directly to The Aus embassy in Berlin. Forget the part about Births Deaths and Marriages in your partners state. I got that bit mixed up with when I was registering my change of name!

Hei!

Yeah!

Lykke til med alt sammen!

Klemmer fra laangt borte :)

Hi

We have 2 boys with an norwegian mum and aussie dad. Is it any downsides by waiting to apply for dual passports for the boys until they are closer to 18. Maintaining just one passport seems so much easier.
