I dont know wether it is the same traditions, but I have to say I'd appreciate if it was a bit untraditional. Then it gets like more special and it would be great to get something different to what everybody has. I would not care about what presents were traditional as special gifts will always be rememered.

I think people would love to get a traditional Norwegian gift, even if it is not trad. in England! I bought a traditional Japanese gift for my best friends when they got married, and they absolutely loved it - it is the thought that counts, and if you put your heart into it, and buy something traditional it will be all the more special for both parents and baby!

I think in Norway there is more of a tradition of giving silver to the baby for christening...while in the US/Britain, a less elaborate gift is perfectly fine as well. Clothes, a picture frame, a photo album are all nice ideas. But if you wish to give them some beautiful silver, I am sure they would love it. If the family is particularly religious, sometimes little bibles are a common gift too.
