Contract before we have kids?

Beeing two people from two different countries can make it hard if one have kids together and it should happen that it doesn't work out. Have read a lot about people not being able to move home to Norway because of the kids. Anyone have experience or know something about writing and signing a contract with a lawyer before we have kids together?

 

I live in the US and feel that if this should happen, my man is "protected" by the laws of his country - could we write a contract that would give me "some rights" also? Would this be valid in case of a court case?

 

Anyone who knows? Does it matter if the kids are born in Norway or the US? Is there anything to be done that could give us equal rights? This is an issue that worries me when it comes to having children together.

As far as I know, it is the laws of the country the child is resident in that apply- regardless of parents' nationalities. This said, of course, one should take into consideration that the baby will probably have dual nationality, meaning though the laws of the "passport" country cannot apply in Norway (for example) they will however apply in the passport country. (Get my drift?) Ex. If you are american, father Russian and kid is born and living in Norway- in case of parental dispute, it is the Norwegian law that applies. But if the father decides to go to RUssia for a visit and take the kid, and then decides to fuck up while he is in Russia (for example keep the kid in Russia) then it is the russian laws that follow...Good luck trying to implement Norwegian laws in Russia!

 

Again, this said, you do have no international treaties that protect children from such hassles.
