Anonym bruker Skrevet 29. juli 2006 #1 Skrevet 29. juli 2006 My partner and I have recently had a little girl. We are planning on moving to Norway at some point but are worried about me being able to get employment as my norwegian is not that good.I have lived in Norway for one year earlier and can speak a little. My converstaional norwegian is ok but it is not in my opinion suitable for a professional position. Anyone want to share their stories...... How long did it take to learn the language well? What work did ye do 'in between'? etc. etc.

I don't know a word in norvegian yet, but I'm going to study it hard and hope to know it well until I'll be redy to start work (when baby'll be 18mnth, to go to kindergarden). Are you going to start wort as soon as you move?
Gjest Skrevet 30. juli 2006 #3 Skrevet 30. juli 2006 My husband and I are living in Norway now. My husband still hasn't found a job, and we might have to move back to the states(he is fluent in Norwegian, but has an accent)...It sucks because Norway is a wonderful place to raise kids(we are expecting). Of course, it depends on what kind of job you'd like to apply for(some jobs obviously require Norwegian skills). I might be naive but I would think it doesn't matter if your Norwegian isn't perfect as long as you are qualified for the job. Good luck studying the language further.
den satt! er beyond Fødeklar Skrevet 30. juli 2006 #4 Skrevet 30. juli 2006 my hubby is american, and has now learned the language from scratch. He still has an accent ,obviously, but it took him less than 6months to learn enough to start working. He is now working as a MD. We strongly recommend Folkeuniversitetet-they have altogether 7 courses which you take stepwise. You pay for one step at the time,my husband only took two of them. So, it is possible! Plus he also met other nice people in the same situation while taking those classes.Recommended!
MathildeC Skrevet 13. august 2006 #5 Skrevet 13. august 2006 It really depends on the industry. You can generally forget about finding a job in the public sector if you do not speak Norwegian pretty much fluently, whereas other industries (such as the oil industry) you can often get a job with no Norwegian. My fiance and I moved from England a year ago and although he does not (and still does not really..) speak Norwegian he got a job within 1 month in the oil industry. Good luck to you both -
Pære Skrevet 15. august 2006 #6 Skrevet 15. august 2006 Have lived here for 7 years and speak Norwegian fluently. It probably took about 2 years from scratch to be able to speak and write the language. I agree about the type of job you are looking for. There are plenty of international companies, whose official language is English. I would however recommend learning Norwegian as soon as possible, as it's much easier to integrate. I started off doing all sorts of work before my present job, and this included working in the public sector, where they didn't speak English (or I didn't want them to). Get people to only speak Norwegian to you, and go to a course, and you'll learn pretty quickly. Also a great way of learning the language is to read the subtitles on the tv whilst watching an English speaking program. Good luck :0)
