Moving to Norway from UK - tips on shipping/driving?

Hi everyone.

We're planning on moving to Norway from the UK (London) some time this year, probably late summer.

 

We're trying to get rid of as much stuff as possible but will still be bringing a small load... not enough to fill a whole container, but maybe about the size of a single room, if that makes sense?

 

I'm wondering if anyone has moved to Norway from the UK and how you did it, if you drove, what were the costs and how much hassle was it? Or if you can recommend any shipping companies?

 

We're not actually sure where to yet, but probably Oslo or Trondheim - depending were my husband can find work.

Its many years since I moved and I'm probably not much use because I did it as a single person with a couple of large suitcases! However, last time I looked there was currently no passenger boat going between the UK and norway so I would imagine driving would be v. involved. There are rumours that there will be a new boat route soon though, whether it ever happens is another matter and I suspect not this year. If you drove over what would you be planning on doing with the car when you arrived?

Just put everything in a large suitcase my self, but had been traveling around for 7 years so didn't have alot.

How much can you get in the car? Take the ferry from Harrich to Esbjerg in Denmark, drive to Copenhagen and take the DAYFERRY to Oslo (cheaper than the overnight one ; )). Maybe one of you take the boat and one fly out? Norwegian fly to Gardermoen, but you have to pay for luggage I think. But if you have to pay transport from Sandefjord (if you use RyanAir) it usely works out the same..

Or Hull to Zeebrugge (Holland) and drive up. But have to take a car ferry from Rødby in Denmark (8 hour) and then either ferry from Denmark to Norway or drive up through Sweden.

Our family have done both, the Harrich trip was best with kids.

 

Remember the schools over here starts again 19th August (ours anyway), so everybody will be traveling home around then... (prices are high then).

 

What does your husband do? Maybe his workplace will pay for the move? (Normal in aviation industry).
