American planing on moving to Norway, what paperwork do we need?

We are moving back to Norway from the States. What is the best way to go about this? Do we go to Norway and then apply for residency, or are we supposed to apply for that before we even go?

 

What time frames are we looking at?

 

Is it kind of like getting a green card in the States, or (crossing my fingers) is it easier and not as labor intensive and expensive?

Hi,

We recently moved back to Norway. My husband is European so it was reasonably easy and we have lived here before so we had identity numbers which makes a big difference. We got schengen visas before we came across and then applied for all our stuff while we were here. If you have time it may better to do your applications before getting here.
