Looking for a nanny

Hi! I'm writing in for my daughter. My husband and I will be working as researchers at the University of Oslo from the 1st of March 2009. Everything is well organized but there is a hitch...We can't seem to find a nanny for my little daughter. On the 1st of March she'll be 8 and a half months old. It seems that she is too young to go to a Kindergarten and the waiting list is really long. Moreover admission is just once a year on the 1st of March. We are on the look out for a certified Nanny (language is not a problem) for her. Officially she can be taken care of from 8 months of age in Norway. Has anyone any knowledge about a Nanny who takes care of 2-3 kids at a time? We'll be living in the University area so it is quite centrally located. Thanks in advance

Not a nanny, but the university got a kindergarden you should be able to use. Its for students, but staff too I asume (studentbarnehage).

When we lived in Oslo( 1,5 years ago) we were taken in in April, so admition is all year (at least in Oslo), it could help that we put down that she didn't speak much Norwegian (she was 2 years old), think its §40 on the form you fill out. You HAVE TO lie through your teeth as competition is fierce. If not ask if barnehagekontoret could help as well.

Good luck in your search for a nanny anyway : )

Hi Noggie! Thanks for your message but we've tried every kindergarten available be it university, of the Oslo Kommune or the private ones and they all say that I have to fill a form and that the waiting list is really long and they can't take me out of turn. My problem is that i am not yet in Oslo I will be arriving mid-February so I can't do much for the moment. To tell you the truth, I am not really optimistic about it as they very catagorically told me that they couldn't accept my daughter. If I have no other option, I am going to go and visit them when I get there. I really need someone to take care of her from the 1st of march. By the way what is a barnehageknotoret? Thanks

Hi

I've not heard of certified nanny in Norway.

If they are certified, then they would be working in a barnhargen instead of working as a so called nanny.

Nevertheless, ff you are indeed looking for a nanny, then it would be a 'dagmamma' where you may and will need to deliver your daughter to her (usually it's a lady). Usually the dagmamma will have a number of not more than 4 children under her care.

Have you tried this website? There are alot of dagmamma online here looking for kids to look after (usually). But 8 months kiddies are alittle too young in my opinion to find a dagmamma as the child is not mobile enough to keep themselves warm for outdoor activities / routines, especially in this cold Norwegian winter season.

This of cause will not be an issue if the dagmamma you find only keeps the kids home all the time. (But if that is so, I would advise you to find someone else).

Good Luck! :-)

Oslo is split in a number of bydeler( don't remember how many). Every bydel got a barnehagekontor, which is part of the service( yeah right)- office. Here they sort out who get in which kindergarden, how many there is in their bydel and if there is any park (short term daycare) or if you got a problem with your kindergarden you can't sort out your self. They may also be able to help with a nanny/ dagmamma.

Some dagmamma/nannies comes to you, some don't. You work it out between you. A registred nanny I asume is one who pay tax (we call them hvit dagmamma). Then the kommune are supposed to check up on her to make sure everything is up to standard and that the kid(s) are in a safe environment.

Do go and visit them and pester like mad, it sometimes help. Also, if you are moving from another place in Norway, have you tried to aplie for a transfer? Sometimes it works quicker on that form you have to fill out. I do stress, you have to lay it on about your situation. Use language, any illness, work scedual etc. Anything you can think of....

How about that "buss kindergarden"? They are supposed to have places. You drop your kid of at a place I don't remember the name of, sorry, and a bus take the kids there. Same bus drops them at the same place in after noon ( you can go and pick up if you like as well).

It's outside the center somewhere, but take kids from all over Oslo. Ask about it, don't remember the name of the kindergarden, but its a start.... Not so popular because of the bus droping the kids, but hey, its a kindergarden just like the others and you CAN go there your self.

Just some hints for you, sorry can't be of more help.
