Hospitals in Oslo

Hi, I am 9 weeks pregnant and when I went to see my Dr last week he didn't want to apply for a fødeplass until my next appt at 12 weeks. Is this too late, and can I email/call the hospitals myself or do I need to call and hassle him to get it done asap? Also, does anyone have any good experiences of for example Ullevål, Rikshospitalet, Asker & Bærum and other hospitals??

You can apply to the hospitals your self, but 12 weeks aren't exactly the day before you drop, is it?

We used rikshospitalet last time and are going there this time as well (31 weeks).

They got accupuncture, baths, gas and the rest if you want it. They do have some family rooms too. You might share the other rooms with one more. Tv in room, but you must buy headset at narvesen for sound. The Scottish midwife left last year = ( , but they do speak English at the check ups for us, so no problem with the language. It was Christmas last time and hubby was very pleased as he even got a small bottle of red wine with his food

I reccommend that you apply yourself NOW! 12 weeks is too late. I know someone who applied at 12 weeks and Ullevål and Rikshospitalet were already full. So she gave birth in Bærum. I applied already at 6 weeks, at Ullevål because you can stay in the hotel after the birth, with your husband.

BTW you apply by sending a letter with your due date and saying you would like fødeplass. The address you find on the internet.

Thanks! That is really helpful.

Are the hospitals inside Oslo that much better than say Bærum? I am unfamiliar with all of them and just wondered why everyone wants to go there?

Well, Bærum is good too, but it's further to travel for most people who live in Oslo. Depends where in Oslo you live I guess. Also, there isn't any neo-natal intensive care unit in Bærum, there is at Ullevål and Rikshospitalet. I chose Ullevål because you can stay at the hotel after the birth, which I did last time too, it was great, so much better than being in the maternity unit!

I applied at 5 weeks for Rikshospitalet. That was too late, so actually I think you can forget about that one.

I thought your GP had to apply for you? Not sure about this though. I went to Ullevål both times, and can reccommend it.

The three hospitals you mention are the ones where you can give birth in the Oslo area. Well, you have A-hus as well. I would go for one close to where I live if I was you.

I meant close to where YOU live of course...haha, doesn´t make much sense to choose one close to me.
