Looking for English speaking dagmamma / daycare in Oslo or around

Hi!

 

We will relocate to Oslo in January 2008 and are looking for an English speaking day care for our 18 months old daughter. We are looking in Oslo or Asker or any city in between. We don't know where to find any list of private day care that would take kids under 3 years old and would be in English or bilingual English / Norvegian.

 

We are also considering a dagmamma if we cannot find a daycare.

 

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks a lot

Hi, are you staying in Norway for a very brief time? If not I would suggest that you go for a Norwegian speaking kindergarten. That way she will learn the language much faster. Kids adjust much faster than adults, and it would be more confusing for home to be all English and kindergarten to be both English and Norwegian than for kindergarten to be all Norwegian. I've had several bilingual children in kindergarten with English as their first language and they do just fine. In Norway most kindergartens take children as young as your daughter, but I think you will have to apply through Oslo kommune.

Thanks for your answer. We actually speak in French at home to our daughter since I am Belgian and my husband is French. We will be staying in Norway for a couple of years only (approx 3 years) and this is also why we would like our daughter to remain in an English environment since she is used to that (she went to day care in English in the USA where we lived for 5 years before relocating to Oslo).

 

We were very surprised to discover that there is no English speaking daycare in Oslo at all for children younger than 3 years old. I am still hoping to find a private barnehage or at least an English-speaking dagmamma, but didn't get any luck so far.
