Questions regarding travelling with baby

Hi all,

I am flying for the first time (alone!) with my 7 month old daughter. I was just wondering about a couple of things:

1. Is ready made formula allowed on the plane? Is there a limit?

2. Do I need to have a letter from my husband (he is Norwegian) stating that he is aware that I (with an American passport) am taking our daughter (she has a Norwegian passport) out of Norway?

Thanks!

I think you can bring formula. But don\T mix them before you go. smartest thing would be to buy those ready made ones... they are sealed, so i think they are safe to bring... only bring what you need of formula on the plane, and put the rest in the bag(s) you are checking in....

about letter, I`m not too sure. But maybe it would be good to have anyway. it doesn`t take long to write, and it doesn`t weigh alot either for you to have in you handbag!!

have a safe trip!!!

Hi

Baby food is allowed on the plane, and in quantities large enough to cover the whole trip (take account for delays!).

Water to mix the ready made formula is not allowed through security.

What I have done is to bring an empty termos, and once through security gone to a reastaurant and asked for boiling water to be filled in it. No problem at all!

Always asked the stewardesses for cold water, but could buy that in the terminal too.

Make sure your ready made formula is easy to use. I have measured them up in separate plastic bags. Doesn't require much space and is light.

Do bring your baby's car seat with you on the plane. Can place her on a shopping trolley or the likes when walking long distances in the airport. Oslo Airport is the worst place I have been with my daughter!!!!!!!!!! Hope you are not going there!

Guess you'll get a cot for her on the plane (long distance). There is a weight limit to the use of these, think it was about 6 or 7 kg. Check it out, so you can say she is under the limit if asked. These are excellent, since she can lay there and play with her toys or sleep. It is much harder when they start to walk, and do NOT want to sit still!

Have a nice trip.

As for 2; you're supposed to have a letter authorizing you to travel with the child, signed by your husband and notarized by the local police authority. I've never been asked for such leaving Norway, but occasionally upon entering the US - although they did let me through in Houston the one time I was asked for this document and didn't have one, after some debate. Would suggest you get one though, seeing as you're more likely to be noticed with a child whose passport differs from yours.

I have the opposite problem -I'm going to Norway with my Norwegian passport, while my daughter has an American passport. Her Norwegian one is expired. Will the Norwegian customs question this, I wonder? Maybe I should get a notarized letter too.

Both my husband, the grandparents and I have travelled abroad with my son (separately) many times, and I have never heard that you need a letter to authorize this. So shouldn't be a problem. Last time I travelled to the US with him they asked during the immigration interview if he was my son (yes) and commented on the fact that we don't have the same family name... :-) That was all.

It will depend on the type of plane if baby cots are available or not. Check in early in case there are more people with babies, often it's first come first serve...

Hi there,

I'm not sure ready made formula (fluid) is allowed, so I would take the powder and then fill up with water after security check or on the plane.

And if you only take the powder with you, there is no limit either (which is the case with fluids - max 100 ml in 1 bottle, which is not enough for your daughters meal I guess)

Another option would be to buy ready made formula in the shops after security and let them seal it. Easy to open and warm up on the plane!

I've been flying a lot with my kids (although not long-distance - only within Europe) and after breastfeeding time was over, I always took the powder with me and had the stewardess fill the bottle with boiled water (I even did this before the new security rules - just cause it's lots easier ;-) )

Good luck on flying with your daughter and have a nice time over there!

Hello,

I've travelled by plane lots recently, including from Oslo Airport (which I think is great, much more relaxing than Heathrow for example!!).

Formula: there is no limit travelling out from Europe on how much you can take, although they generally ask you to take only what you need for the journey on board the plane. I've just the ready mixed cartons, as I find them easiest.

But you can also take powder, and you ARE allowed to bring water for mixing it - at least if you're going through security at Gardermoen! At some airports you have to taste any liquids in non-sealed bottles though (my friend had to taste her thermos of boiling water! not nice!). Also, for baby food the 100 ml rule doesn't apply.... Check with your airline if you're still not sure, may be slightly different rules for flying to the states, I'm not sure.

Personally I prefer sending the car seat and not taking it on board as it's a pain to carry around - I've taken a small umbrella type stroller instead which you can take with you all the way to the gate.

Good luck!

for the passport question earlier:

a norw citizen must travel into norway w a norwegian passport. If the passport is exp, do get a new one from the embassy before travelling. Same with traveling into usa, for the mother who is american, and has a baby w norwegian passport. They will ask for am passport.

I was told, at the us embassy here, that my son will not be allowed to travel into the us w his norwegian passport (i'n norw, the father is american), he is considered an american citizen when entering the states. They asked for his am passport at heathrow when checking in there.

I took my carseat for the baby once on a long flight and will never do it again. It was such a hassel hauling around with me and the baby. If you are travelling alone it is too much to handle. I was told when taking my son to the USA his norwegian passport sufficed as 'permission' for him traveling with out one of the parents since both parents have to sign the passport application at the police station in Norway. The USA might differ on its end though and it might be good to have the back-up letter just in case. I also took my son into the states on his norwegian passport because i hadn't realized his american one had just expired. I didn't have anything problem with it. Good Luck with your trip.

Really!? I've travelled with my daughter dozens of times without such a letter from her father (my ex-husband). She has dual citizenship and I've sometimes travelled wtih her using her Norwegian passport and sometimes with her other passport. Nobody EVER asked me any questions - oh, except once, when we travelled to the US with my gorgeous new husband. We had three different passports and three different last names, and the immigration officer jokingly asked my daughter "So, who are these people you're with!?" and she said "my mum and her husband!" and that was that.

I've never heard that you're supposed to have a letter. Heck, my daughter's even travelled with her grandmother!

Now for a child to get a passport, both parents need to sign a form saying that they're OK with it. Is that what you're thinking of?

Your daughter is entitled to enter Norway for three months on a tourist visa, and once she's here she can stay obviously since she's a citizen - shouldn't make any difference. If you want you could bring her expired Norwegian passport or some other proof of citizenship (birth certificate?) just in case but I'm sure it'll be fine.

Skrevet

Well. This is strictly speaking true but you can certainly fudge it. The important thing is just that you travel in and out of any country on the same passport, otherwise they'll think you've overstayed your visa.

I had let my daughter's non-Norwegian passport expire, and we travelled to my home country last month. I realised Norwegians need a visa, panicked, rang the embassy - they said they shouldn't be telling me this but just to apply for a visa for her. There was a slight possibility the visa-system woudl pick up that she was a citizen but the embassy didn't think the databases were interlinked. She got the visa no problems (20 second online affair) and we had no problems at all.

I've also often travelled abroad with her with only her non-Norwegian passport - that means we've left Norway and returned to Norway on her non-Norwegian passport. No questions, ever.

I did hear a story from a Norwegian/US friend who got into trouble when he travelled IN to the United States on his US passport and then tried to fly OUT using his Norwegian passport. They picked up on that - and gave him some grief but he was fine once he showed them his US passport.

hi.

if you or your children have a u.s. passport and are traveling to the u.s. (regardless of dual citizenship) you should use your u.s. passport leaving and entering. baby formula and food is allowed and a letter is a good idea, but i have never (nor have any of my other american friends) had to have one or been asked for one. better safe than sorry though :-)

umberella stroller is a great idea, but if you buy a seat for the child then you should take the car seat. so much easier for a 7 1/2 hour flight! ever heard of the sit-n-stroll? best invention ever! it's a carseat, airplane seat and stroller all in one. bassinet is a good idea, but some airlines only have one so you should reserve it when you make your reservation. can't think of much else except good luck!!
