We have two cultures in our family, American and Norwegian. My Norwegian wife wants a traditional Norwegian name for our new son; I'm not opposed to that but some of these names are names that only a Norwegian mother could love (ie., they just don't translate well into American English. Oh, and to be egalitarian, horrible and trendy American names are off our list, too).

So I suggested Nicholas or Adrian. And my wife thinks the first is horrible and the second is a new, trendy Norwegian name.

Any suggestions?

I'd say Adrian equals U.S DeWayne in tackiness. In Norway, that is. Sorry. =)

I, too, love old norse names - but with an American spouse to consider, we ended up with fairly traditional, biblical names that are common in both cultures.

Norse male names that are not absolutely awful in English, imho, would be: Jon, Thor, Jonar, Eldor, Magnor, Olaf, Rand, Gerald, Herman, Ingar, Arvin, Erik, Trym, Osmund, Ari, Edvin, Bright, Darren.

Most of these are far from common, and pronunciation would at times be substantially different in the two languages though.

Oh, and I suggest you aim to avoid the norse name "Jerker."
