tøy bleier (english)

Hi! I have posted this questions on the English forum as well, but thought I'd try here too.

Our (first) baby is arriving in only 5 weeks and we are considering using tøy bleier for environmental reasons.

I would like to hear some feedback from those that have used/are using the system. Is it really THAT much hassle? Best tips for odor-control? Any favorite shops to buy from? What would you recommend to get started? Should I go for the all-in-one or the traditional kind? Do all of the options use the inner flushable pad?

Thanks a lot! I am really confused about the options available in Norge, since my Norwegian skills are pretty poor (Arrived here only three months ago!) and I want to make sure i make the right choice and don't end up wasting a lot of money or time or patience! ;)

Tusen tak!

Hi!

We use cloth diapers and it is really no hassle. I think it's much more hassle to carry that bin to the rubbish every day, and bring diapers home from the shop ;) With the cloth diapers I just pick up the (fabric) bag and shove it in the washing machine, and voila! We don't have a tumble dryer, so I line dry the diapers, but I don't mind at all.

And they smell less than paper diapers!

We have the traditional prefold diapers with woollen soakers, and that is working best for us. The All-in-one or pocket diapers with PUL on the outside (a "plastic" fabric that breathes) makes chiquita's bum go a little red if we use it for a whole day.

My favourite shop in Norway is www.bleieboden.no and in the US I've ordered from www.cottontailbaby.com (but if you shop via the internet from abroad you can only shop for 200 NOK or less to avoid Norwegian taxes)

We don't use a flushable pad, because chiquita goes on the potty or in the sink (she's 7 months) The pad only works if your baby has solid poo. And if (s)he hasn't pooed you can wash the pad along with the diapers, they can take a few washes :)

Well, I hope this was some info you can use. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your help!

When you mention "traditional prefold diapers" you are talking about the brettebleier, right? So, as I was explained, you use this brettebleier and then a diaper cover and that's it? How often do you change the woolen sokers? How many prefolds would you suggest I start with? And covers?

The more I read about tøy bleier, the more excited I get, I think it will definitely be a good idea. We don't have a tumble dryer either, so it's good to know that you are doing just well about that.

Chiquita goes on the potty with only 7 months? This is my first baby so I'm not quite familiar with timing, but it does sound quite impressive!

I tcontacted bleieBoden and they are just great. This woman explained each option with so much detail and patience! I am really liking their customer service already and I guess that if one of the reasons for using tøy bleier is ecological, it would make more sense to order locally, hm? (the tax advice comes in very handy too!)

Thanks a lot again!

It is suggested to have about 20 brettebleier. They are cheap, I think 99,- for 12 at Jysk, I believe :)

You need some day time covers (not sure how many), and 2-3 night time covers.

The wollen soakers doesn't have to be washed unless you get poop on them, you just hang them to dry between uses. It doesn't matter if you get pee on them, they have wool fat in them wich reacts with pee and makes soap.

For more resources and other tøybleie users, visit tettinntil.no.

If you register as a user, you can apply to use the tøybleie forum. A great site :)

Good luck with your baby :)

What's Jysk? Brettebleier is selling the package (x4) for 69Kr. Jysk sounds better! :)

SHould I get wollen soakers instead of regular day/night covers then?

I'm going to check out the forum you mention too!

Thanks a lot!

Jysk is a store that sells interior stuff, like curtains, duvet covers, towels, some furniture and lots of other stuff. They also sell fabrics.

You can find your store at jysk.no :)

Whether you want wollen soakers or pul covers is your choice. Some people can't be bothered with the maintenance wool needs, others love the way the wool "breathes".

Looking forward to seeing you on tettinntil :)

For me, buying locally doesn't really matter when it comes to cloth diapers. The diapers sold in Norway are all imported anyway - so unfortunately there is just as much "waste" of CO2... The only exception is ImseVimse which is produced in Sweeden, and they make all ecological diapers (at least I think so)

I have 23 brettebleier from Jysk. We used 3 diaper covers from ImseVimse, and some woolen soakers I knitted myself. Now we just use wool since we don't have any poo leaks ;)

About the potty-thing: We just held her over the sink every time we changed her diaper, or if we heard that she was about to poo. And now she doesn't poo in the diaper. They make quite strong signs about when to go if you just look, so it wasn't difficult at all. We started when she was maybe three months, and since she was 5 months we have just changed two diapers with poo. Great!
