britt72 Skrevet 12. desember 2007 #1 Skrevet 12. desember 2007 I love American pancakes, but I never get them just like I remember them from the States. Some recipes call for buttermilk, but what is that? I do know as to what the dictionary says, but do we have a Norwegian substitute? Can it be made? Or do anyone have a great recipe that do not need this? Please!!! :-)
Little Miss Naughty Skrevet 12. desember 2007 #2 Skrevet 12. desember 2007 I have used "skumma kulturmelk" as substitute for buttermilk since. Not in pancakes but in muffins.

2trollunger Skrevet 15. desember 2007 #4 Skrevet 15. desember 2007 I just went to the kitchen to get my much beloved cookbook, and the recipe says "kulturmelk". Enjoy!! Hope they taste just like back home!
melke-q Skrevet 18. desember 2007 #5 Skrevet 18. desember 2007 Buttermilk in Norwegian is called "kjernemelk". It is not possible to get it in any shops as far as I know. It is not something used in the Norwegian cuisine, and I had never heard about it until I started investigating when given a recipe that needed buttermilk...
Tokatter_USA Skrevet 19. desember 2007 #6 Skrevet 19. desember 2007 Kulturmelk is a good substitute, if not the same thing (I don't know). It tastes the same to me.
DelabeB Skrevet 21. desember 2007 #7 Skrevet 21. desember 2007 "condensert melk" is sweetened condensed milk, and it is NOT buttermilk! Using it would make for a strange subsitution in pancakes! Actually, condensed milk is rather hard to find here--I only ever found it in the foreign food stores-- What they do have is Viking Melk, and that is evaporated milk, in English. Kjernemelk is buttermilk, and it is not usually readily available--but hey it is almost out of use in the US too....hard to find! I found it on sale ONCE at a gård--they had all kinds of fresh farm foods, and buttermilk was among them... Any farms near where you live!
