Anonym bruker Skrevet 2. oktober 2007 #1 Skrevet 2. oktober 2007 we are an english/norwegian speaking family. We are expecting #3, and we are having a hard time eciding on the nae this time. We used to live in the states when the first 2 was born, now we live in Norway. We chooe sort of 'international' names you can say with the first two. Names that can be pronounced easy in both languages, and thought to go the same way this time. We like longer first names preferably 6-7 letters like the first two. We like an 'L or an E' in there, but not a must. The middle names we already have for both a girl or a boy. For a girl it will be Liv or Siv, and for a boy Jon. These are family names. What do you guys think of these names?? Fell free to rank, and/or add other names. Girl: Olivia Emilia Kamilla Matilda Boy: Oliver Patrick Edvin Kevin Kiran Finnian We appreciate any help from other eng./nor. mom's or dad's. Thank you!!!
kathrinemor Skrevet 3. oktober 2007 #2 Skrevet 3. oktober 2007 I like all the girls' names, especially Matilda ! Of the boys' names I like Oliver and Patrick. They sound about the same in English and Norwegian, too!
Chunky81 Skrevet 3. oktober 2007 #3 Skrevet 3. oktober 2007 i like girl: emilia and matilda boy: oliver and patrick
Gjest Skrevet 3. oktober 2007 #4 Skrevet 3. oktober 2007 I think that Emilia is such a beautiful name, I would have chosen that name because it is easy to pronounce in both languages. Kevin is also easy pronouncing in both languages, and that is my favorite for the boys. I love Olivia, Emilia, Kiran and Kevin ;-)
partyoffive Skrevet 3. oktober 2007 #5 Skrevet 3. oktober 2007 Thank's a million girls! It is great to bounce it off on other mom's (mom's to be). The same names has been has been circulating in our heads for so long we just can't seem to get it togehter as ieasy as the first two times. less time I guess? Any other comments/suggestions are more than welcome!
Anonym bruker Skrevet 5. oktober 2007 #6 Skrevet 5. oktober 2007 Olivia, Emilia and Matilda - I like them all! My sister's name was Matilde (pretty much the same, and it works in both languages...!) BUT, I must say that Matilda is my favourite of the two. I'd go for Matilda, I really like that name, though I don't really see how either of the names really fits into the "Siv" or "Liv" thingy... For me Matilda Siv og Matilda Liv sounds kinds.... Weird? I don't really know how to put it... Other names could be: Sophia, Aurora, Hannah, Linnea, Leah, Eline, Adele... But I like Matilda, so I vote for that... Frankly, I don't like any of the boy names... What about Emil, Jasper, Wilhelm..? They are all pronounced pretty much the same in both languages... Good luck!
partyoffive Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 #7 Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 Great w/more input! Thank's! I agree w/the girls names. That was my gut feeling to, it is down to Emilia, Matilda and olivia. I think Kamilla is out. That was the last on out list. I find the boys names hard. I have two girls from before, and find it so much easier w/girls names that goes in both languages. Siv or Liv, and jon is chosen like explained above, bc they are family names. They are after the kids' grandparents. My feeling on these middle names, is that they don't really need to 'go with' the first names at all. They are more just there for symbolic reasons. One hardly ever uses these names in everyday life anyways. I can't say I ever use mine, unless I have to write down my full name somewhere. Keep the opinions and suggestions coming girls! Would love to hear from more of you!
Gjest ->>- Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 #8 Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 The girls' names are all fine. Kiran and Finnian - the latter in particular - don't work too well in Norwegian. And I'd take into consideration that Kevin and to some extent Patrick could be thought of as slightly low class names in Norwegian. Other boy options are Elliot, Jacob, Simon ... and most other biblical names, really.
Anonym bruker Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 #9 Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 Wow - is this stemming from that idiotic thread in here about 'Kevin and Dennis' (and now Patrick as well according to you) are not 'propernames' and that they are viewed as lower class and often connected w/being lazy an/or a looser?? I completely disagree. I have never met anyone in Norway named Kevin or Dennis, but I have lived in both the U.K. and the US. In these countries I have met/known several named Dennis, Kevin and Patrick. here in Norway there are several named Patrick, and I can't see at all how this is a lower class name. Where do you live to have such a judgement. And you think it is better to run around w/biblical names in Norway? In a country that is pretty much consisting of atheists! How hypocritical is that. I think Patrick is a great name for an English/norwegian boy. 'Partyoffive' I really hope you don't take comments like this into consideration. My votes are Patrick or Loiver for a boy, Emilia or Matilda for a girl!
partyoffive Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 #10 Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 Ha-ha, no these comments do not have any affect on my decision. I think it is great that people come w/their opinions, otherwise I wouldn't ask. But, I certainly chose what I take to hart. I have, however, seen the thread you are refering to about kevin and Dennis, and I thought it was plain stupid. But again, thank God people's opinions are different. My husband is Irish, Patrick is his 'christian' name, for those who are familiar w/the catholic church and all it's wonders...It also happens to be my husband's late father's name. So it is very meaningful to us. Lower class in Norway - I don't agree. far from it, but I really don't care. I am not basing my kids names soley on what is popular in Norway. The main purpose is to get a name we like, that works in both languags. Thank you to all who contributes! Keep it coming!!!
Gjest ->>- Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 #11 Skrevet 6. oktober 2007 Sigh. I said "could be thought of as." I live in Oslo. It has nothing to do with the abovementioned thread. I know quite a few people (Norwegians) who'd mention Kevin in particular as a typical "sosialklientnavn" if that means anything to you. All I said is that OP may want to consider this - personally I couldn't care less whether s/he names his/her kids DeWayne or James. Yeah, I think it's considered more mainstream among middle class Norwegians to have a name like Elias or Johannes or Simon. I wouldn't quite agree that Norway is a predominantly atheist country neither, but that's entirely another debate.
Athravil Skrevet 8. oktober 2007 #12 Skrevet 8. oktober 2007 I do not really like your suggested girl's names in combination with Liv/Siv. "Olivia Liv" is rather repetetive, I find, and is perhaps better as a single name? One name that strike me as perhaps suitable for you is "Ellisiv". Emilia Siv/Liv can work. Boy's name would in my opinion be Patrick Jon Kevin Jon Oliver Jon
AO3 Skrevet 8. oktober 2007 #13 Skrevet 8. oktober 2007 For a girl: Matilda is, in my opinion, the best choice if the middle name is going to be Liv or Siv, although Emilia Siv could also work. Olivia Liv doesn't make any sense - even if you're not going to use the middle name except when filling out forms and yelling at the kid, Olivia Liv is still way over the top. For a boy: I really love both Oliver and Patrick. Most Norwegians are going to find the names Kiran and Finnian a bit strange at first, although they are easy to pronounce. Both names are beautiful, though. Not so fond of Edvin, but that's just me. When it comes to Kevin, I haven't read the thread others here have referred to, but I can pretty much guess what it is about... If you prefer Kevin, who cares what anyone thinks? I would never name my son Kevin, partly for reasons already mentioned here (I'm a bit ashamed to say), BUT I think it's different for children with one/two English-speaking parents.
Anonym bruker Skrevet 9. oktober 2007 #14 Skrevet 9. oktober 2007 I like Emilia, Olivia and Matilda. In that order. And I think they all go w/either Siv or Liv. And how about Marissa? And to meg80 and others above who mentiones that Olivia Liv does not really work. I agree - BUT, she says Liv or Siv. Olivia Siv could work!! And I agree w/her, who ever uses their middle name together w/the first name anyways. Unless it is w/- between, and it isn't so...I think it is great to use family names that way. For a boy. I agree that Finnian, and Kiran are nice names, but maybe norwegians might have a hard time w/them. Oliver Jon is my favorite. Second is Patrick Jon. They both sound good, and Patrick does not at all have a bad 'rep' in Norway.Kevin however, ..I probably would be more hesitant with. And how about Torben jon? Or Robin Jon?
Anonym bruker Skrevet 13. oktober 2007 #15 Skrevet 13. oktober 2007 Like all your alternatives except for Edvin (personal view), and would just like to add a couple more. Our son is called Henrik, and all my English relatives just love the name! They've said that although it's quite unusual in England, it's still a well-known name because of Henrik Ibsen. And it's easy to pronounce in English. Matilda is a beautiful name, love it!
Anonym bruker Skrevet 28. oktober 2007 #16 Skrevet 28. oktober 2007 I agree wholeheartedly. For someone who grew in other countries and moved to Norway in his/her 20s it is quite striking how Norwegian name trends indeed follow social class. A name says so much in Norway, way more than in any other country I have been living in. Patrick and Kevin are certainly names associated with less fortunate parents, lots of trouble etc. Like Roy, Ronny, Roger etc. There are always exceptions of course. All the girls' names on the list are totally fine but on the boys' list I, for one, would have gone for Oliver or Edvin.
Anonym bruker Skrevet 28. oktober 2007 #17 Skrevet 28. oktober 2007 i like the combination jon thomas
nå er vi fem Skrevet 2. november 2007 #18 Skrevet 2. november 2007 I really like Emily as an alternative to Emilie/Emilia. Or Elizabeth and Victoria. Good luck with your choice - they are all pretty names:-)
Anonym bruker Skrevet 10. desember 2007 #19 Skrevet 10. desember 2007 I really like the names Mathilda and Olivia. Another favourite of mine is Antonia. I sort of agree with what is said about the name Kevin, but I like Oliver and Patrick.
Anonym bruker Skrevet 12. desember 2007 #20 Skrevet 12. desember 2007 About names and social classes. In Norway it is actually so that some names have a bad rep, unfortunately. I never would imagine that it has to do with the name itself, but evidently with the ones who gave the name. And if you look to cases reported to PPT and such, it appears that many more boys with names like Ronny appear in their files!I know this for a fact from a survey! Perhaps it has to do with many lower class parents watching more TV, getting more English sounding names from soaps and that many of them lack the knowledge to follow up their children as to homework? Also they lack the funds to pay for expensive activities in their spare time, thus the child ends up in less fortunate circumstances. In Norway we have always had some "high class names" and "lower class names", but that doesn't mean it has to stay that way! Oliver is a very extremely popular name right now. I really like Thomas and Morten. Both can easily be spoken in English too. Good luck!-)
Anonym bruker Skrevet 26. desember 2007 #21 Skrevet 26. desember 2007 oliver is a nice name.thomas too. kevin and dennis not proper? i know two boys named kevin, both are very nice.i like the name matilda, and hannah:) good luck finding THE name:)
Anonym bruker Skrevet 29. desember 2007 #22 Skrevet 29. desember 2007 For reasons unknown to me these names that are great names in English seem to wind up associated with troublemakers and (Sorry to say this) white trash. I live in southern Norway in a very small town, I've moved alot since we came here from the US in 89 and I've lived in quite a few smaller towns and the trend is the same in all (so far). Perhaps it's different in bigger towns than it is in the smaller ones? More variation in bigger towns you know..?
Anonym bruker Skrevet 2. januar 2008 #23 Skrevet 2. januar 2008 Great to see that people are still poppin in with opinions/suggestions. We hae now found out that we are expecting a boy. Oliver and Patrick are still on our list, and we have added Martin and Fillip. it is now between these 4 names, any suggestions? HI
Anonym bruker Skrevet 8. januar 2008 #24 Skrevet 8. januar 2008 Matilda is beautiful! And Patrick's the best of the boy's names. How about Amalie? Hmmm that may be a bit difficult in English... We had the same problem ourselves, and I think the candidates were Sofia/Sofie, Julie, Emma... we couldn't find any boy's names, so fortunately it was a girl!!! But I like Thomas. I just have a feeling you will think the names I like are boring...
Anonym bruker Skrevet 14. januar 2008 #25 Skrevet 14. januar 2008 Pretty names, i would have to choose Mathilda if it`s a girl. The boy names im not really sure about. But i really love the name Gabriel, think it sounds so good in norweegan, but even better in English! Good luck, u have many pretty names to choose from;)
